June 28, 2010

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-Seneca, issued this statement on the passing of U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat who died as the nation’s longest-serving U.S. senator:

“Senator Byrd was not only the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate, he was one of its most effective members.  He represented West Virginia with passion and dignity.

“I had the pleasure of seeing Senator Byrd in action on many occasions and particularly admired his deep understanding of the Constitution and the rules and traditions of the Senate.  He was respected by all his colleagues on both sides of the aisle.  Senator Byrd was a valuable ally and worthy opponent.  He will be viewed by history as one the giants of the Senate.”

We all owe Senator Byrd a debt of gratitude for the only unfunded mandate a Conservative can love, to wit, the mandate that all organizations, offices, schools, etc., that receive Federal monies, must set aside time for education and/or celebration of the Constitution on Constitution Day, Sept. 17th, every year!

This is the Senator’s greatest legacy!

Robert Byrd, R.I.P., and may the Constitution you revered enjoy better days in the future.
