SCHotline Breaking News

S.C. Sen. Chip Campsen (R, Isle of Palms), who previously served in the S.C. House of Representatives and as chair of Gov. Sanford’s transition team, will not enter the race for the Congressional seat currently filled by Henry Brown. Citing his disinterest in encumbering his family with the sorts of lifestyle changes that would arise if he were to win that race, Campsen confirmed tonight in a phone call with Michael S. Smith II that he will not seek election to the U.S. Congress in 2010. He did indicate he has not ruled out running for such an office at a later time — specifically, after his boys have grown up.

In a telephone conversation with Smith minutes later, Chip Limehouse (R, Charleston) said he is still thinking about entering the race for the seat Rep. Brown announced earlier in the year he will not seek reelection to fill. Pointing to his leadership role with the S.C. House Ways and Means Committee, S.C. Rep. Limehouse stated: “I have worked hard to get to a point where I can really be of service in a very meaningful way to South Carolinians. I need to determine if I can be more useful to the people of South Carolina in my current position, or in Washington. My decision to run — or not to run — will be based on that.”
