BBQ—Supreme Court style

July 1, 2008

By Jeffrey Sewell

That wisp of smoke coming from the Supreme Court building is not Jean Toal getting ready to smoke a July 4th pork butt. It’s Jean Toal getting ready to burn the collective asses of the General Assembly.

Legal experts privately say the court gives all the appearances that in short order, it will strike down a hopelessly-flawed bill that is to bobtailing what Pam Anderson is to plastic surgery.

We have reported here in utter amazement that hours after the high court declared bobtailing unconstitutional, the legislature passed the gold standard of bobtailing, tacking on amendments that have nothing to do with the subject matter of the bill. In this case, gas distributors convinced the honorables to bail them out of a poor business decision they made with oil companies.

The oil companies immediately filed a lawsuit, asking the Supreme Court to decide the bobtailing issue without having to go through lower courts. The court granted the petition 7 hours after it was filed—unheard of, say legal experts. Moreover, the court granted the injunction and petition without a hearing—also very unusual.

So get ready, folks. There’s gonna be a BBQ: smoked political butts garnished with heaps of embarrassment.

Pass the mustard-based sauce, please.
